ECMI belies media reports of expulsion of Filipinos in Italy and Israel

The CBCP Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ECMI) sought to clarify media reports early this month of the possible repatriation of some 200,000 undocumented Filipino workers in Italy and Israel.  The reports came on the heels of actual expulsion over the past few weeks of Filipinos illegally working in Malaysia, and who were subjected to human rights violations and other atrocities while in detention.   FULL STORY
 

Bishop Celso Guevarra passes away

Bishop Celso N. Guevara, Bishop Emeritus of Balanga (Bataan), passed away last August 13 at the St. Luke's Hospital in Quezon City.  He was 79.

His remains were brought to the St. Joseph Cathedral in Balanga City, and Requiem Masses were offered on August 16 at the Balanga Cathedral and at the San Fernando Cathedral in Pampanga.  After the 8 a.m. Mass in Balanga, they were transferred to the St. Nicholas Parish Church in Capas, Tarlac.   FULL STORY
 

Holy Father won't be coming for World Meeting of Families

The Vatican has officially informed the organizers of the Fourth World Meeting of Families, which is scheduled in Manila on January 22 to 26 that Pope John Paul II will not be able to attend the celebration.      FULL STORY

Laiko leads 'Laity Week' celebration Sept. 22-28

The Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas (Council of the Laity of the Philippines) will spearhead this year's celebration of Laity Week, scheduled on September 22 to 28, and centered on the theme "Pamilyang Pilipino: Tagapagpahayag ng Mabuting Balita ng Bagong Milenyo".  The theme of the celebration focuses on the family and serves as a fitting preparation for the forthcoming Fourth World Meeting of Families in January next year.   FULL STORY
 

National Seafarers' Day scheduled Sept.  29

Our Lady of Guadalupe parish church now an Archdiocesan Shrine

Just when Congress is considering the passage of the controversial House Bill 4110, otherwise known as the "Reproductive Health" Bill, the Archdiocese of Manila underscored its strong opposition to contraception, euthanasia and abortion with a decree elevating the parish church of Pro-Life Patroness, Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati City, to an Archdiocesan Shrine.   FULL STORY
