Mass weddings in Manila

MANILA, August 11 -- Manila Archbishop Jaime L. Cardinal Sin, expressing concern over the increasing number of Catholic couples  living together without the blessings of matrimony, has directed all pastors in parishes of the Archdiocese  to hold mass weddings at least once every two years.  Catechists and mem-bers of the Legion of Mary are especially mandated to seek and minister to unmarried Catholic couples who are living together.

"It is the thrust of the Church to make the spiritual blessings of the Church available to all, especially the poor," the Cardinal said in a circular released recently.  "Nobody must be deprived of the blessings of the sacrament because of material poverty."

Likewise, he admonished pastors who are soliciting the help of politicians or those aspiring for elective positions in the next elections," For the sake of pastoral discipline, mass weddings must be initiated by our pastoral workers and parish priests and must be kept untainted by partisan politics," the Cardinal stressed.
